Sound Sensitivity (Hyperacusis) & Auditory Overload

Sound sensitivity, sometimes referred to as hyperacusis, occurs when everyday sounds are perceived as unusually loud, uncomfortable, overwhelming, or even painful.

While often associated with hearing disorders, sound sensitivity is increasingly understood as a complex neurologic and auditory processing condition involving both the ear and the brain.

Individuals with sound sensitivity may experience:

  • Discomfort from everyday environmental sounds
  • Difficulty tolerating crowded or noisy environments
  • Increased listening fatigue
  • Startle responses to sudden sounds
  • Difficulty concentrating in sound-rich environments
  • Anxiety or avoidance of social situations
  • Coexisting tinnitus

Sound sensitivity may be associated with:

  • Noise exposure
  • Concussion or traumatic brain injury
  • Migraine disorders
  • Auditory processing dysfunction
  • Vestibular disorders
  • Tinnitus
  • Neurologic stress responses
  • Changes in auditory gain regulation within the central nervous system

Research suggests that in some individuals, the brain may amplify sound signals differently, causing normal environmental sounds to feel excessive or overwhelming.
