Your brain is a remarkable organ with a limited amount of processing power available at any given moment. Imagine that processing power as a pie.

Every second of the day, different parts of your brain "take a slice" of the Brain Pie to perform their jobs. Vision takes a slice. Memory takes a slice. Attention takes a slice. Movement takes a slice. Language takes a slice. Hearing also takes a slice.

When your hearing system receives a clear, precise sound signal, the hearing and language centers of your brain can understand speech using a relatively small slice of the Brain Pie. That leaves plenty of brain resources available for other important tasks, remembering what was said, participating in conversations, solving problems, reading facial expressions, or simply enjoying the moment.

When the incoming speech signal is unclear or degraded, your brain doesn't give up. Instead, it works harder.
